[Market analysis] In 2016, the global 100GbE optical module market reached $1.15 billion

In 2016, the global supply of 100GbE optical devices exceeded supply, and suppliers were actively expanding production.

According to LightCounting, shipments of 100GbE QSFP28 products increased significantly in the fourth quarter of 2016. Suppliers such as AOI, ColorChip, Finisar, Asectron, Intel, Luxtera, and Source Photonics all ship in high volumes.

Data show that in 2016, global sales of 100GbE optical modules reached $1.15 billion, compared with $460 million in 2015, an increase of 150%. At the same time, the global shipment of 100GbE optical modules in 2016 was close to 1 million, of which QSFP28 optical module shipments were more than 700,000, and half of the shipments occurred in the fourth quarter.

The construction of new large data centers and the upgrading of existing data centers will require a large number of 100GbE optical products, and LightCounting expects the market to grow significantly in 2017.
